Fire alarm metal boxWhat is the Community Warning System?

Contra Costa County’s Community Warning System (CWS) gives Contra Costa County residents warnings about threats to life or health.  For example, the system warns about hazardous materials incidents, law enforcement activities, missing persons, utility outages, gas leaks, road closures, man-made disasters, and inclement weather.

The CWS is a partnership among several agencies.  These include the Office of the Sheriff, the Health Services Department, and other public, private, and nonprofit agencies.

How are the alerts delivered?

Depending on your preference, there are many ways to contact residents.  CWS contacts people through landlines, cell phones, texts, or email.  If getting a phone call on a landline, the number will say “000000000” — so don’t hang up!  Also, you can check out their social media (Facebook and Twitter).  Or, you can get a NOAA weather radio.  CWS also uses the Emergency Alert System and the Wireless Emergency Alerting System.

How can I sign up?

To sign up with an email address and phone numbers, use this form.  Landlines are already in the alert system.
