Having a pet while aging may provide a myriad of benefits.  More importantly research shows that having a pet helps maintain a healthy heart, especially if that pet is a dog.  Those who have any kind of pet are more likely to engage in more physical activity, have a better diet, and good blood sugar levels.  Additionally, having a pet is also linked to having better mental health.

Pets can be a great addition to your life by providing companionship thereby providing a positive health impact.  A study focused on those over the age of 50 found that 79% of older adults found that having a pet reduced their stress levels, while 73% reported that having a pet gave them a sense of purpose. Studies have also found that having a pet may ease pain and help seniors in establishing a routine, attributed to caring for a pet.

Many seniors find themselves experiencing loneliness regularly, which is usually accompanied by irregular sleep or high stress levels, or even inflammation.  Adding a new furry member to the family may greatly improve one’s well-being.
