Contra Costa Senior Legal Services Launches New Elder Abuse Restraining Order Clinic

What: Contra Costa Senior Legal Services is starting a free Elder Abuse Self-Help Restraining Order Clinic. The clinic will launch on Tuesday, December 2, 2025.

When: Every Tuesday (note that there will be no clinic on December 30th and holidays).

Time: 8:30am – 11:30 am (note that you must arrive by 11am to receive assistance. If you arrive after 11am, we may not be able to assist you).

Where: The clinic will be held at 1026 Escobar Street, Martinez, CA 94553 in Conference Room 238, next to the Contra Costa Public Law Library. The Law Library is located in Suite 2C at 1026 Escobar Street.

No appointments needed: the clinic is walk-in and first come, first served.

Elders can get free help with civil restraining orders at the clinic. Elders can get help with the following types of civil restraining orders:

  • Elder Abuse Restraining Orders
  • Domestic Violence Restraining Orders
  • Civil Harassment Restraining Orders.

The clinic will provide elders with information about applying for these restraining orders. The clinic will not provide legal advice and will not provide participants with an attorney to represent them in their restraining order case.

The clinic can help with things like:

  • The process of applying for a restraining order and how to apply for one
  • What paperwork is needed to apply for a restraining order
  • How to fill out the paperwork to apply for a restraining order
  • Information about serving a restraining order
  • Information about what to expect at a hearing and how to prepare for a hearing
  • How to request a continuance (postponement) of a restraining order hearing

The clinic will help individuals seeking to apply for a restraining order to protect themselves and people seeking to renew a restraining order. The clinic will not help people respond to a restraining order request that has been filed against them.

Who is eligible for the clinic?: The clinic is for elders only. Anyone who is age 60 and older AND a resident of Contra Costa County is eligible for the clinic. If you are younger than 60 or live in a different county, we can provide you with a referral.

Do I need an appointment to come to the clinic? No, the clinic is walk-in only. You do not need an appointment. The clinic is first come, first served.

Will the clinic provide me with a lawyer to represent me in my restraining order case? No, the clinic will not provide you with a lawyer to represent you in your restraining order case.

What can the clinic do for me? The clinic will give you the information that you need to apply for a restraining order on your own.
